» Greenkeeping Report: June 2010       16 Jun 2010 [ Click to view/hide ]

As we enter into our busiest months of the year I was delighted to receive plenty of positive comments following the successful Seniors Open event. We re-marked all of the hazards and boundaries, edged and topped up all bunkers and made sure the course looked at its very best. Rest assured we aim to keep it that way!

Weed control has now been carried out over the whole site, some 80 acres were treated. This was long overdue and will be repeated annually as well as localised spraying as required. Our presentation will be further enhanced with new tee signage, ball washers and bins which are on order for delivery next month.

We are continuing with additional drainage work to the driving range with Phase one works nearing completion. Improved contouring can also be seen at the back of the range which will allow for a simplified daily mowing and collection operation. The whole range will be seeded as soon as conditions allow.

Our greens aeration programme continues on a regular, minimum disruption, basis followed up with a comprehensive feeding and fungicide programme to keep our greens in the best possible shape. A similar programme of works is followed for tees, approaches, fairways and roughs.

The 10th Tee is now officially in play with the seed in the surrounding areas now slowly starting to finish the picture. I would like to thank you all for your patience whilst this tee was out of play.

Finally, it is disappointing to have heard that 2 of our junior members were recently caught by a member of staff vandalising our greens during play. These members have now been banned and the matter put in the hands of the Police. I am personally thankful to Sam Smith for his prompt action who escorted these people from the course. It is with this in mind that I would encourage everyone to report back any issues relating to course damage immediately so we can catch and stop the perpetrators.

We are proud of what we have achieved so far, are very appreciative of your ongoing support. We will continue in our efforts to provide you with a top quality golf course.

Please let me have any feedback to andy@hortonparkgolf.com

Maple Leaf Golf, owner of Chichester and Hill Barn Golf Clubs in Sussex, has acquired Horton Park Golf Club from the administrators. Horton Park, which went into administration in December 2008, was acquired by Maple Leaf Golf after a hotly contested bidding war with a number of serious bids being received by the administrators. Peter Townson, who has been running the site on behalf of the administrators, said ‘We are delighted with the outcome. Maple Leaf Golf are an established golf operator with an excellent track record, it was just what this business needs’.

Maple Leaf Golf acquired Chichester Golf Club which has two 18 hole courses, a driving range and a Par 3 course, in 1999. In 2003 it acquired Hill Barn Golf Club, the spectacular 1930’s built Hawtree designed course from Worthing Borough Council.

Richard Haygarth, who will be running the new site, said ‘We are very excited about Horton Park. It is one of the best courses in the area and fits perfectly with our existing businesses’.

Plans for Horton Park include a new irrigation system for the Par 3 course, a new fleet of green keeping machinery, the return of buggies and a day one purchase of 20,000 range balls. Haygarth commented ‘It’s a great business with excellent staff that just needs the proper investment’

Members are also delighted about the new ownership as they will now get the privilege to play the Group’s other three courses in Sussex. Club Secretary, John Prichard said ‘It’s a great outcome for the members who will get a secure golfing future and an even better course’.
